Rock Classification

To understand the rocks of a region, you must first understand how these rocks formed. A rock's
true history is rarely simple. A simple, clean, fine grained sandstone could once have been part of
beach. Before that, it could have been grains bouncing down a river bottom or across a desert's
surface. Originally, it may have been quartz crystals in a granite buried deep beneath the earth's
surface.
The first step to understanding the world of rocks around you is understanding what they are and
how they are formed. There are three basic types: Igneous, Metamorphic, and Sedimentary.
